Calcium

Calcium is essential in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. In addition, we need calcium for blood clotting, and for our heart, muscles and nerves to function properly.

Most people are aware that dairy products are a good source of calcium, but there are other dietary sources. Leafy green vegetables, tofu, soya beans and nuts all contain calcium, as does bread and any other products made with fortified flour.

Calcium deficiency can lead to rickets in children and osteoporosis in older people.
