What Is Constipation?
Constipation refers to infrequent or difficult bowel movements, often accompanied by straining, discomfort, and a feeling of incomplete emptying. While frequency varies from person to person, having fewer than three bowel movements per week is commonly used as a guideline.
Common causes include low fibre intake, dehydration, lack of movement, stress, and disruptions to the gut microbiome. Constipation can affect quality of life and may also increase the risk of longer-term gut health problems.
How Is Constipation Linked to Sourdough?
Sourdough, especially when made with wholegrain flour, can support regular bowel movements and improve stool consistency. This is due to its high content of dietary fibre and fermentation-enhanced bioavailability:
- Fermentation enhances fibre functionality – The slow fermentation process breaks down certain compounds, making prebiotic fibres more accessible to the gut.
- Wholegrains retain fibre – Wholegrain sourdough provides both soluble and insoluble fibre, which support stool bulk and bowel movement regularity.
- Improved microbial balance – Sourdough encourages microbial diversity. A balanced gut microbiome is linked to improved motility and reduced constipation.
- Reduced gut irritation – Unlike some refined breads, long-fermented sourdough is often gentler on the gut and easier to digest.

A Lifestyle Approach to Constipation
At The Sourdough School, our approach to constipation includes baking and lifestyle changes rooted in Lifestyle Medicine. This includes:
- Eating diverse, high-fibre foods such as those found in our Botanical Blend flours
- Staying hydrated throughout the day
- Engaging in regular movement
- Supporting gut microbial health with fermented foods
Our courses teach how to bake bread that supports gut health, offering practical and evidence-informed strategies to ease constipation through diet.
If constipation is ongoing, severe, or associated with other symptoms like weight loss or bleeding, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.
