Give your baker a start with Vanessa’ own starter. This White Sourdough Starter Kit is such a stylish gift in a moon grey ceramic Kilner jar (600ml).

The white starter has sweet yoghurt-like flavours and is The Sourdough School’s original starter.

This French white starter is one that Vanessa has using since she was 11-year-old and originates in the bakery she grew up baking with while in France. It takes a bit longer to reach its peak and is generally slower and sweeter, and much more forgiving of being neglected for a week, so it is the one Vanessa recommends for beginners.

Vanessa has verbal confirmation that the starter originated over 115 years ago and has been maintained ever since… it’s a lovely story…Vanessa says, “Although the microbes double every 20 – 30 minutes when they are refreshed…so it is either over a century old or 30 minutes old depending on how you want to look at it”.

Our kit now comes with a free 3 month White Sourdough Starter Course – with everything you need to learn how to make, refresh and use your starter, and keep it in optimum condition.

Sourdough starters are really the key to everything we do here at the Sourdough School and Sourdough Club. Once a starter is created and refreshed, a portion is used to create a leaven which not only gives your bread a beautiful rise but also ferments the flour to make your bread much healthier. Slow fermented dough unlocks nutrients within the flour making it much easier to digest. This also helps to nourish your own microbiome, and a happy microbiome can lead to better health and well being. The sourdough starter is absolutely crucial to the process, and our comprehensive videos demystify this process into easy to follow instructions. We look at types of starters, how to refresh your starter, starter maintenance as well as recognising and correcting mistakes.
